Ribbon Blenders for Industrial Mixing
by Colin Fairweather, CEO, Facet Engineering
Ribbon blenders, also referred to as ribbon mixers are industrial mixing machines that are commonly used across various industries for the purpose of blending and mixing free-flowing products such as dry powders, granules, flakes, and pellets. A ribbon blender consists of a single powered continuous paddle that has been designed to rotate either in one direction or two directions.
What Are Ribbons Blenders Used For?
Ribbon blenders are primarily used for mixing a wide variety of dry powdered products, including spices, powdered mixes, cosmetic powders, chemical additives, fertilizers and ceramic powders, to name just a few. Ribbon mixers are effective in mixing products of a similar shape, size, and density.
FACET ENGINEERING RIBBON BLENDERS
Facet Ribbon Blenders consist of a U-shaped horizontal trough which has been fitted with a horizontal longitudinal shaft onto which arms are mounted, which support a combination of ribbon blades, paddles, or helical screws that are set at a close clearance to the trough to ensure that the product is mixed evenly.
The most effective configuration of a ribbon blender is using a double spiral. As the outer ribbon moves the product in one direction and the inner ribbon moves it in the opposite direction, this creates axial flow, which prevents product build-up and extends mixing times.
It is important not to exceed the capacity of the ribbon blender, as this can render the mixer or blades ineffective and result in the product not being adequately mixed.
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF USING A RIBBON BLENDER?
Ribbon blenders offer the following advantages:
- A wide range of free-flowing products can be mixed or blended using ribbon blenders, making them highly versatile.
- Ribbon blenders are highly efficient mixers.
- Ribbon mixers have a low mechanical failure rate,
- Ribbon blenders are cost-effective, due to its low maintenance requirements and simple design.
Ribbon Blender Models and Sizes
At Facet Engineering, we design and manufactured our range of ribbon blenders in-house from food-grade stainless steel. We produces a range of ribbon blenders available in different sizes and capacities, starting from 125 litres up to 2500 litres.
When considering the model and size of a ribbon blender, it is important to take into account the bulk density of the product being mixed as well as the operation capacity required.
