Where Lemco came from
LEMCO’s story began in 1967 when Pieter Laubscher Construction started designing and manufacturing steel products and buildings in the Northern Cape, South Africa. The company established a sound foundation in the steel construction industry and by 2008 Pieter’s sons, Andries and Pieter Jnr had both joined the business. New offices were opened in Malmesbury, Western Cape, and for the first time, the company started trading as LEMCO – Laubscher’s Engineering Manufacturing Company. In 2009, LEMCO Structural Steel Pty (Ltd) was registered as a company in its own right, and by 2010 we were already recognised as one of the leading brands in South Africa. Today we are proud to say that LEMCO has grown in stature and now also exports quality steel structures to the rest of the African Continent.

Lemco EPC
LEMCO Engineering Procurement and Construct (EPC) was born from years of experience in the steel fabrication industry.
Introduction
We spotted a massive need for optimised economical design that was caused by designers and fabricators being worlds apart from another – a gap growing ever bigger due to the evolution of fabrication technology. To answer this need LEMCO started employing in-house engineers, handpicked as top-class innovators. We also invested in 3D design software, ensuring every building is optimised to the last bolt and nut – something that was previously impossible with the conventional 2D design software. The designs are also continually refined to suit the latest fabricating equipment.
Benefits of EPC
Under LEMCO EPC, we offer design, fabrication and construction of steel frames for the following structures:
- Multi-storey steel buildings

LightSpan™
LightSpan™ is our own patented, standardised steel structure range that is low in cost, yet high in quality. It was developed particularly with the South African agricultural community in mind, where value for money is of the utmost importance. LightSpan™ was launched in 2009 and has been very successful up to date with hundreds of satisfied clients countrywide. Patent: #A2009/01092.
About Lightspan
In contrast to welded hot-rolled sections that are generally the norm, all the main structural members of each LightSpan™ building are made out of continuous hot-dipped galvanised cold-rolled sections. These members are all CNC punched during the rolling process and bolted together onsite using custom-made connections to form a unique steel frame.
You get value for money
The fact that all the structural main members are CNC punched, virtually eliminates manual labour – which amounts to a huge saving in production cost.
Galvanised to go
Generally, cost-effective structures, as is used by South Africa’s agricultural community, are painted with only one layer of red oxide primer. Depending on the corrosive environment, this paint specification can give a limited lifespan but is the most basic and cheapest specification available on the market. Continuous hot-dipped galvanising is more cost-effective than batch-type galvanising, but can only be applied to coil – not to hot-rolled ‘I Beams’. This makes it possible for us to provide a galvanised steel structure in the same price range as a painted structure.
