The book Master Farmers: Leaders and Legends portrays the success stories of twenty distinguished South African farmers and reflects the path each of them took to reach where they are today.
The farmers were nominated by large agribusiness companies according to certain selection criteria. The interviews were done on their respective farms and, for the first time, their wisdom and insights were recorded in book form.
In each of the book’s twenty chapters, one of the farmers tells a unique story of how he used creative solutions to overcome serious challenges. Inadvertently, the farmers also relate how they became strong leaders in agriculture who left a legacy by creating a successful family business.
The farmers share how they manage finances, technology and succession, and how they approach prickly agricultural issues such as land reform, redistribution and labour legislation.
In the words of agriculture economist Dr Kobus Laubscher: “By means of proven success stories, the authors have succeeded in emphasising the value of family businesses in contributing to food security and rural development while maintaining biodiversity. The writing style is relaxed and entertaining, making it easy to spot the truths and inviting one to want to apply the farmers’ insights.”
In the words of a reader: “One of the truths in the book is to surround one’s self with successful people – with this book you are in the company of twenty successful farmers.”
The interviews were facilitated by Dr Piet van Zyl, a retired farmer and academic, and written and translated by Tisha Steyn, a freelance writer.
