Jatropha project an inspiring international success
“It all started as a hobby,” reminisced Julia Thandeka Shungube (aged 42), the proprietor of Siphandane General Trading. It is situated in the Mbangwane area in Ehlanzeni District. BEHIND the thriving essential oils and pharmaceutical sectors in the Mpumalanga Province and neighbouring countries is an enterprise that actually started as a hobby. Making success more unimaginable is the fact that the individual spearheading this growth is a woman from a humble background, who was employed as a security guard for 16 years. Established in 2006, inspired by her now-late grandmother, her company is involved in processing the plants to produce castor oils, known for preventing rash and stretch marks, among other benefits.
In August 2016 Julia purchased one of our solution to process and do mass production using an electric cold press.
Jatropha oil is extracted from jatropha seeds using a jatropha oil extraction machine. The yield of these seeds determines the volume of the oil to be extracted as well as the amount of feedstock to be introduced into the machine for oil extraction. The Jatropha curcas is the most commonly used fruit in the extraction of this oil. These fruits are picked while ripe and the seeds removed for sun drying. For the seeds to be ready for oil extraction, they should be left to dry in the sun for several hours. Alternatively, the seeds can be roasted for up to 15 minutes. Sun-drying or roasting the seeds helps in breaking down the cells that contain the oil thereby easing the oil flow. “An interlocking block with the right ratio of cement and other raw materials, and is also cured well cannot crack,” Yes, there is no funding but when I entered competitions I won and from the prizes, I managed to expand and we are no longer using pots to [extract] the oil. We have machines for faster, professional production. As we speak the product is selling in pharmacies around the country.” she says.
Hydraulic cold seed press this press is suitable for cold pressing a variety of oil seeds, such as Jatropha, sunflower, peanut, coconut, marula, sesame and palm nut. The prepared seeds are loaded into a stainless steel cage and placed onto a base plate in the press frame. A hydraulic cylinder raises the base plate and cage, pressing the seeds against a vertical shaft with a circular end plate which slides inside the cage. The hydraulic cylinder is operated by an electronic-driven hydraulic pump. The crushing pressure can be set for various applications. The oil flows out of the slotted holes in the cage into a collection tray. The capacity of the cage is approximately 8 to 10kgs per batch of seeds. The pressing system can also be operated with an optional manual hydraulic pump.
