Agricultural training in Africa

PROMOTIONAL FEATURE | 19 SEPTEMBER 2016

Over the past few years Bathopele Agri Development Institute has trained more than 5,000 African farmers in agriculture. Some of their courses include emerging farmer development, operator training, smallholder development programmes and agri-contracting programmes, to name but a few!

Bathopele partnered with John Deere to enable farmers in Africa, through training, to run agricultural contracting services businesses sustainably and profitably.

Setting up and running an agricultural contracting services business requires business skills, marketing skills and technical know-how, with regards to farming implements and their running costs and maintenance requirements.

Bathopele recently trained 50 farmers in Tanzania.

The leaners' feedback on the training was extremely positive and appreciative. They regarded the learning methodology to be both appropriate and effective, especially the practical demonstrations. Additionally, they showed a passion for learning and improving themselves through their businesses.

Some of the feedback included:

"The course was helpful. I learnt how to start a business and now understand the requirements needed to do so. Also, as a result of the training, I now know how to work on implements in different types of soil. The course was valuable and I have gained a lot of information. The facilitators were accommodating, fair and well-experienced."

"It is very important to follow the correct way of cropping to be able to produce quality products and to avoid the disadvantages of deep crop planting. I have learned ways of handling income, expenses and savings. I sincerely ask for more training at our University, especially tractor operating – it was excellent."

"I have learned how to properly start a farming business. I also learnt how to manage my income, expenses and profit – and how to effectively use the different types of equipment, soil and fertilisers. The facilitators were very cooperative, involved and excellent; I have never seen such experienced people who shared their knowledge so easily."
